Who does not know olive oil, essential in the Mediterranean diet, has many properties for the body, prevents cell death, is good for the heart and hypertension, is used in beauty treatments, hair shampoos, and how rich is a salad with  good olive oil, and I tell you!

 How olives are harvested?

Now we are in November, especially earlier this month, is when start to harvest the olives from the fields. Since very little I went to their collection and I have seen many ways to collect the olives.

All life has been taken over by hand, at this time 50% of the olive is ripe and ground but the rest still hanging on the tree, pulled with sticks hitting the branches, and then collected all manually (although very few use it)

Another way to collect the olives are collected first the floor, then spread tights or blankets on the floor, stick with the stick to the branches (or utensils are also used that hook to the branches and makes them vibrate and olives fall on top of the blankets), and collected blankets olives

But especially in large farms in the area of Almeria, which is used in a device that attaches to the tractor and deployed shaped umbrella, umbrella approaches the tree, extends and starts shaking the tree and olives falling within the umbrella (if any resists use the stick) is much faster than going to the branches sticking sticks but the device is worth your money.

There is another way much cheaper to harvest the olives, my family are starting to use, is to take good care of the land, i.e. the land of the field, especially under the olive should be flat and hard, without being carved what we do is just take the sticks, and a broom or industrial brush threw olives ground and then just have to sweep the floor, much faster and you have almost to crouch, after, to remove any stones have a kind of filter (patented at home), which passes the olive, and collects stones, so draw leaves ‘Automatically ', with a car radiator fan going up dropping olives, the wind takes the leaves, leaving only the olives, if we see some leaves, repeat the process.

Once we have the olives go the cooperative, analyze them and take the average of litters per kilo of olives, press them and you get your own olive oil, no mixing with other people. In return you have to pay a % per kilo and be a member of the cooperative.

In another article I speak olive varieties, production areas, crop and pests.
